19 Crimes Chard „Behind Bars“

The wines of the "19 Crimes" line recall people convicted of at least one of nineteen crimes in Britain who were exiled to Australia instead of being sentenced to death. In many cases, those who survived the journey across the seas built a new life there, thus becoming part of a newly emerging country.

The "Hard Chard Behind Bars" commemorates the courageous actions of the women who were among the exiled as well. The Chardonnay from South Australia is powerful, showing lots of character. On the nose, it offers noticeable wood aromas. The multi-layered bouquet is complemented by aromas of stone fruit and ripe fruit, along with toasted oak notes and nuances of butterscotch and honey. The golden Chardonnay is structured and creamy. Its finish is enriched by notes of butter and vanilla.

19 Crimes

An 19 Crimes stimmt alles.

d'Arenberg The Stump Jump Lightly Wooded Chardonnay
Wonderfully aromatic with white peaches and honeydew melon dominating the nose with a lovely dose of green apple freshness and a touch of spicy oak in the background. Nectarines join the party on the palate with limy acidity and a lovely custard like mouth feel. The oak is very subtle and provides the texture and a touch of supportive spice. Parcels of fruit are selected from our vineyards in the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. Once they have been gently crushed, the grapes are basket pressed to softly extract the juice from the skins. 60% of the juice is partially or fully fermented in a mixture of older French and American oak to add a touch of spice and mouth feel. Once fermentation is complete the winemakers taste all batches to determine which will suit this gentle and fruity style of Chardonnay.Whether drinking on its own or with a fresh plate of seafood, salad or chicken you can’t go past this little gem.

d'Arenberg The Olive Grove Chardonnay
The nose is aromatic and lifted with white flowers, tropical fruits, granny smith apples and white nectarine. The palate has considerable weight with a lovely mid palate of white peach, lime and a touch of brioche. There is zesty acidity that builds on the palate to a long savoury finish with a hint of cashew nut and faint, fine, textural tannins. The cool year shines through in the balanced delicate flavours from the McLaren Vale fruit.

19 Crimes "The Uprising" Red
‘The Uprising’ is a wine that was aged for 30 days in rum barrels and is a tribute to Australia’s Rum Rebellion of 1808. As the rum trade was hindered by the government at that time, citizens and soldiers joined together to bring down the government. The ageing in rum barrels gives this wine its dark, jammy body and a finish characterised by notes of warm brown sugar. The grapes for the 19 Crimes ‘The Uprising’ come from selected vineyards that are renowned for their spice and concentration, giving the wine its great intensity and sensational flavour. In the 2019 vintage, the Shiraz grape variety is predominant, giving the wine light notes of raspberries and a fine tannin structure. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes produce lovely blackberry aromas and ensure fullness and structure on the palate. The ‘The Uprising’ is rounded off by a smaller percentage of Grenache, giving the wine its spice and sweet fruitiness. On the nose, the wine offers intense notes of mocha, caramel and baking flavours.Like all wines of the 19 crimes line, ‘The Uprising’ has a history of its own:The man depicted on the label was a member of the Fenian brotherhood from Skibbereen in Ireland who played a major role in the Fenian movement right from the beginning. In 1864, he was arrested, found guilty, sentenced to ten years in prison and deported to Australia.
