Der Graham’s Tawny Port 20 Years leuchtet goldbraun, wie ein Bernstein. In der Nase zeigt er ein hervorragendes Bouquet mit einem typischen „nussigen“ Charakter und köstlicher reifer Frucht mit Noten von Orangenschale. Dieser Port ist wunderbar mild. Am Gaumen klar strukturiert und perfekt ausbalanciert. Der Geschmack ist stoffig, reichhaltig, weich und süß. Das Finale glänzt durch Eleganz und Volumen.

Graham’s ist die Geschichte der Familien Graham und Symington, in deren Besitz das Unternehmen seit nunmehr zusammengerechnet drei Jahrhunderten ist. Graham’s steht für Tradition und Innovation im Douro-Tal und produziert seit je her feinsten Port, sowohl im Einstiegsbereich bis hin zu Vintage-Ports oder Portweinen aus besonderen Lagen.

Es begann damit, dass die schottischen Brüder William und John Graham, die ihr Geld als erfolgreiche Unternehmer im Handel mit Indien verdienten, im Jahre 1820 im Austausch für die Lieferung von Waren 27 Fässer Port akzeptierten. Ganz offenbar gefiel den Herren Graham der Port so gut, dass sie kurz darauf beschlossen, selbst mit Port zu handeln.

1890 wurde der nächste Schritt getan und man erwarb das Weingut Quinta dos Malvedos im Douro-Tal. Die Qualität der Weine dieses Gutes, welches über beste Lagen, Boden und Klima verfügt, war und ist herausragend, sodass sich der Name Graham’s als Garant für Premium Ports etablierte. In der Folge wurde weitere Weingüter akquiriert, die alle im Privatbesitz der Mitglieder der Familie Symington stehen. 

Diese übernahm 1970 das Unternehmen, wobei die Symingtons bereits seit 4 Generationen in der Portweinherstellung tätig sind. Gegenwärtig ist Charles Symington der Master Blender; einer seiner Vorfahren AJ Symington, war bereits vor einhundert Jahren bei den Graham's tätig, so dass sich hier der Kreis schließt.

Graham's ist angesiedelt in Vila Nova de Gaia, wo sich auch Graham's 1890 Lodge befindet, in wunderschöner Lage am Ufer des Río Douro gelegen.  Dort angeschlossen ist auch das Restaurant, mit Blick von der Terrasse auf die pittoreske Altstadt von Porto.

With regard to the production process and the type of wine, the Penfolds Father Grand Tawny is similar to a port wine, though it is not allowed to bear the protected term ‘port’. However, this does not diminish the wine’s quality and characteristics - on the contrary, Penfolds, Australia’s most famous winery, has produced a genuine delight. The different base wines are at least 10 years old. Wines of an average of 15 different vintages unite to create the Penfolds Father Grand Tawny, thus ensuring that the nuances of each vintage produce a concentrated Tawny. The base wine is traditionally enriched with specially distilled alcohol containing between 78 and 85 of alcohol by volume, simultaneously increasing both the Tawny’s alcohol content and its complexity. In the glass, the Father Grand Tawny is a light brown of medium intensity with hints of yellow and green at the rim. On the nose, it offers wonderful notes of oak, chocolate, plums and roasted nuts, complemented by nuances of cloves and anise. On the palate, the Tawny shows its full power and elegance, offering sweet notes of fruitcake and concentrated wood aromas. Its finish is wonderfully balanced, fresh and long-lasting.The Penfolds Father Grand Tawny 10 Years is lovely on its own as an aperitif and goes beautifully with sweet desserts.

Dieses Verfahren findet Anwendung beim Sherry, Brandy oder Port. Beim Grandfather Rare Tawny werden einzelne Chargen verschiedener Rebsorten in getoasteten Eichenfässern gereift. Die Kernauswahl der Sorten bilden dabei die Rebsorten Mourvedre, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon und Grenache. Wobei in einzelnen Jahren auch andere Rebsorten zum Einsatz kommen. Nach 14 Jahren werden die Weine zur ersten Stufe der Solera, dem Grundwein, zusammengemischt. In sechs weiteren jährlichen Stufen wird jeweils etwa ein Drittel des Weins aus der nächstjüngeren Stufe hinzugefügt. Dieses lässt sich als eine Art rollierendes Verfahren beschreiben. Nach der sechsten Stufe liefert der Wein für die Flasche ein durchschnittliches Mindestalter von zwanzig Jahren. Der Wein wird am Schluss mit einem Destillat von 78 bis 85% Alkohol aufgefüllt, bis ein Gesamtvolumen von 20% erreicht wird. Die Bezeichnung Grandfather stammt aus dem Jahre 1915, damals hat die Familie Penfolds erstmals ein Eichenfass mit der Mischung aus dem Tawny Material für die Verwendung des Solera Verfahrens reserviert. Aufgrund des Alters dieses Weines nannte man den Wein Grandfather. Die Farbe des Penfolds Grandfather Rare Tawny 20 Years ist in ein intensives Gelbbraun gehüllt. Durch die lange Fassreifung zeigt sich am Rand eine typische gelbgrüne Zeichnung ab. In der Nase präsentiert sich der Wein mit Noten von Lakritz und gerösteten Nüssen, sowie mit einem Duft nach Obstkuchen und Rosinen. Trotz des Alters deutet sich eine intensive Frische an. Am Gaumen zeigt sich eine schöne Cremigkeit und Ausgereiftheit. Klassische Vanille Aromen runden den Geschmack leicht süßlich, voll und rund ab. Im Abgang dominiert nochmals Frische und Frucht. Der Grandfather Rare Tawny 20 Years ist ein hochkonzentrierter und komplexer Wein.
