In contrast to the 2014 vintage, the Delheim Grand Reserve 2015 consists of significantly higher percentages of Merlot. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, which are predominant in this wine, come from three different vineyards located in the Stellenbosch region. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes grow on vineyards located on the slopes of the Klapmutskop Mountains. The vines for this wonderful cuvée are at least 10 years old, and some of them are more than 20 years old, ensuring exceptional depth and structure of the wine. To ensure optimal pre-selection, all the grapes were picked by hand.

During the fermentation, the grapes were stirred three times a day to achieve maximal aroma extraction from the grapes. The whole process was carried out at controlled temperatures. After the three grape varieties were aged for 16 months, the maturity of the Merlot was decisive for the blending and therefore for the mixture of the final wine. Finally, the Delheim Grand Reserve matured for another 4 months in used 300-litre oak casks.

On the nose, the brilliant, dark ruby-red wine pampers your senses with aromas of mint, cassis and truffle, rounded off by fine nuances of red berries. On the palate, the wine shows wonderful fruity notes which are preserved despite the wine’s immense fullness and power. The Delheim Grand Reserve 2015 goes beautifully with any luxurious meal and is also an ideal accompaniment to tangy cheeses.

Das Weingut Delheim liegt hoch auf den südlichen Hängen des Simonsbergs in Südafrika. Seinen Ursprung hat das Weingut auf einer Farm, auf der anfangs nur Obstbäume und Krüppelholz wuchsen. Sie wird bereits im Jahre 1699 erstmalig in der Geschichte erwähnt; damals noch unter dem Namen Drie Sprong.

Im Jahr 1938 kaufte der Deutsche Hans Hoheisen die Farm als Altersruhesitz für sich und seine Frau Deli. Nach seiner Frau benannte er auch die Farm: Delheim – Deli’s Heim. 1940 begannen die Hoheisens auf Anraten von Freunden Weinstöcke anzupflanzen. Hoheisens Neffe Michael Sperling unterstützte seinen Onkel seit 1951 und übernahm 1957 das Weingut komplett. Michael Sperling genannt „Spatz“ führte das Weingut zu weltweitem Ruhm. Es zählt heute zu den renommiertesten Weingütern in der Region Stellenbosch und ist auch in Deutschland ein Begriff. Hier werden Weine mit beständig hoher Qualität und ungewöhnlichen Namen hervorgebracht. Inzwischen sorgt mit Viktor und Nora Sperling die Generation nach „Spatz“ dafür, dass die Delheim-Weine weiterhin erstklassig sind.

Wichtigste Strategie von Delheim Wines ist die gleichbleibend hohe Qualität der Weine. 5 Sterne von John Platter, 92 Punkte vom britischen Wine Magazine für den Vera Cruz Shiraz, und der Delheim Sauvignon Blanc 2001 gelangte in die Auswahl für die 100 Topweine auf der Sydney International Wine Competition. Auch die Cabernet Sauvignons werden stets wärmstens empfohlen.

The grapes for the Delheim Merlot come from vines that are almost 20 years old, located in the Peperboom vineyard. The ‘Peperboom’ (‘pepper plant’ in English) was originally cultivated here. The harvest was carried out in a two-step selection in order to achieve the maximum concentration of tannins and colour. The wine was fermented with selected yeasts in stainless steel tanks at temperatures between 77° and 82.4° F. Subsequently, the wine remained in contact with the skins for another 18 days and then aged for 15 months in French oak casks, of which 20% were new barrels. Its bouquet offers noticeable aromas of tobacco, red fruit, cloves and cinnamon. On the palate, the Delheim Merlot is elegant, with a subtle structure and silky tannins. It is full-bodied, showing a remarkable freshness recalling aromas of bilberries and plums. Another three to four years of ageing in the bottle will further enhance the wine’s qualities and contribute to its optimal stage of maturity. The Delheim Merlot is definitely a genuine delight to enjoy with fried chicken or mushroom soup.

The Meerlust Merlot comes from the traditional Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch - a wine estate that has been synonymous with top South African wines for centuries. This single-varietal Merlot cuvée impressively demonstrates how complex and long-lasting the grape variety can be vinified in the cooler locations of the Cape Winelands.The wine shines a deep ruby red in the glass. Intense aromas of black plums, dark cherries and fine herbs unfold on the nose, accompanied by hints of mocha, tobacco and subtle spice. On the palate, the Merlot is powerful and juicy with ripe, dark fruit flavors and a present but elegant acidity. Notes of cherry tobacco, black pepper and delicate wood provide multi-layered depth. The red wine from Stellenbosch combines notes of dark fruits (with blackberries and black currants predominating) with hints of tobacco and tomato leaf. There are also nuances of violets, blueberries and graphite. On the palate, Delheim Grand Reserve is dry and wonderfully elegantly balanced. Natürlicher Weingenuss par excellence. Die Trauben für den reinsortigen Pinotage aus Stellenbosch in Südafrika wurden akribisch gelesen; es wurden nur die besten Trauben bester Qualität geerntet. Die erste Sortierung wurde bereits in den Weinbergen vorgenommen.
