The brothers Johann and Paul Kriege have been running the Kanonkop estate in the Stellenbosch region for four generations. It owes its international reputation not least to the passionate winemaker Beyers Truter. In South Africa, he is already said to be the “king of Pinotage”. With great dedication and remarkable precision, his successor Abrie Beeslaar continues this success story of Kanonkop’s first-class red wines from the Simonsberg slopes.

The Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage is a wonderful example of this. This pure varietal Pinotage has a nose redolent of red fruit and mocha, showing a high complexity. The wine is characterized by its elegant tannin structure, a good length as well as a dry finish.

The Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage matured for 15 months in second-fill French oak casks. Enjoy this wine with pasta, red meat and spicy Asian dishes.

Das Weingut Kanonkop liegt an den unteren Hängen des Simonsberges in der Stellenbosch-Region der Westkap Provinz. Es liegt zwischen Stellenbosch und Paarl und fällt in den Simonsberg genannten Wahlkreis, der allgemein als „Rotweinbecken“ Südafrikas bezeichnet wird.

Neben der soliden Basis des Gutes in seinen Prinzipien der Weinherstellung, ist es auch reich an idealen Böden, kühlen Meeresbrisen und langen Sommertagen, die ein perfektes Klima für das Wachstum der Trauben bilden.

Das Weingut hat ein ideales Mikroklima für die Produktion von Rotwein, mit einer kühlen Brise von der Küste der False Bay an späten Sommernachmittagen, wodurch die hohen Inlandstemperaturen erheblich gemildert werden.

‘Diesel Pinotage’ is certainly an unusual name for a wine. However, it is easily explained once you know the history behind it. ‘Diesel’ was the name of the dog of Beyer Truters, the owner of the Beyerskloof estate. The dog was his beloved, loyal and constant companion. Diesel was always at his side, whether in the vineyards, in the cellar or in his office, so it was only logical that Beyers Truters named his best wine after his ‘best’ friend.The grapes for the Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage come from bush vines that are cultivated without wire trellis training systems. In South Africa, the bush vine method is often used specifically for Pinotage. The fermentation took place in open barrels for 5 days at an average temperature of 78.8° F, while the must was pressed down every 2 hours. Subsequently, the malolactic fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks. Afterwards, the wine matured for 18 months in new French oak casks. Only 20 out of a total of 300 filled barrels were chosen to produce the Diesel Pinotage.The Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage is a deep purple in the glass. Its bouquet is characterised by complex aromas of blackberries and dark fruit, complemented by elegant notes of cedar wood. On the palate, the wine shows a fine but complex structure of black and red fruit. This Pinotage is truly a superb wine, captivating with its outstanding balance between fruit and wood. This wine has an outstanding ageing potential and it is expected to be a genuine delight over the next 10 years or even longer.It is an ideal accompaniment to spicy Indian cuisine or a well-matured rump steak. The Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage is arguably one of the best Pinotage wines from the Cape.

The grapes for the Lanzerac Pinotage come from vineyards that are located between 400 and 420 metres above sea level. The prevailing wind cools the grapes in hot summers. The soils consist mainly of decomposed granite, enhancing the vines’ deep growth and improving water retention in the soil. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks with regular pumping over, the Lanzerac Pinotage matured for 15 months in first-, second- and third-fill oak casks.At this point, the optimal integration between fruit and wood was completed, resulting in a wine of excellent colour with fragrances of ripe berries and plums. On the palate, the Lanzerac Pinotage is velvety, dense, full-bodied and complex, showing a lovely balance. Unter anderem in diesem Weinberg wird mit einem integrierten Schädlingsmanagement gearbeitet, was ein Teil des Fokus ist auf das sich das Weingut Neethlingshof konzentriert. Dafür wurden Eulenpfähle im Weinberg platziert umso eine natürliche Schädlingsbekämpfung zu unterstützen und den Einsatz von Pestiziden zu verringern. Die Weinberge wurden 1997 bepflanzt und sind reich an organischem Material. Sie liegen auf einer Höhe von 120 Metern und bestehen vornehmlich aus zersetztem Granit. Der Neethlingshof The Owl Post Pinotage hat eine tiefrote Farbe, eine komplexe Textur mit schwarzen und roten Früchten. Die Tannine sind wunderbar eingebunden und werden von einer feinen Säure unterstützt. Das Bouquet zeigt reife Fruchtaromen, unter anderem Banane. Im Hintergrund stellt sich eine schöne Vanillenote ein. Am Gaumen wiederholen sich Reife und Fruchtintensität. Der The Owl Post Pinotage ist reichhaltig und samtig. By planting the pinotage grapes in rows in a north-easterly direction the grapes are not in the bright afternoon sun. This prevents them to develop a roasted and spicy aroma. And it helps even more that the sea is near, only 8 kilometer away. By low proceeds of 50 hectoliters per hectare the grapes get lots of intensity and the wine has enough strength and depth to let a part of it mature in wooden barrels. Fermentation at no more than 25 ° C ensures plenty of fruit. 40% of the wine matured in French oak barrels or American origin, making this a pleasant vanilla tasty Pinotage without sacrificing the fruit.
