Lanzerac Merlot

The grapes for Lanzerac Merlot come from vineyards located in the Jonkershoek Valley near Stellenbosch. These vineyards are divided into four different parcels of land with vines that are between 9 and 17 years old, covering an area of 20.31 acres. This terroir consists of deep red, decomposed granite soils and is located between 125 and 400 metres above sea level. After arrival in the cellar, the grapes were selected by hand and destemmed. Before they were gently pressed, the loose grapes underwent a second selection by hand. Subsequently, the grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks with pumping over twice a day, allowing an optimal extraction of colour and aromas.

The Merlot matured for 12 months in second- and third-fill French oak casks. The optimal point of the ripening process was reached by regular racking. This appetizing Lanzerac Merlot has a lot to offer and leaves nothing to be desired.

On the nose, it offers concentrated aromas of black fruit, along with sweet notes of vanilla and spicy aromas. The tannins give the wine more complexity, gently underpinning aromas of plums, black cherries, cooked strawberry purée and dark chocolate, finely rounded off by a long, integrated finish.

The Lanzerac Merlot goes beautifully with veal chops and portabello mushrooms, gnocchi in a red pepper sauce with crispy pancetta or with a creamy gruyere and parmesan cheese risotto.

Lanzerac Wine Estate

Product recommendation

Thelema Merlot
The Thelema Merlot aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (30% new). This South African Merlot is wonderfully balanced, juicy, offers fine fruit flavors and hints of toast. The tannins are well integrated and enrich the wine in just the right way. The finale, with underlying notes of dark chocolate is the crowning finish of this fine taste of Stellenbosch. For the winery Thelema the vintage was a real challenge. In a dry, warm and windy year different varieties of grapes were ripe at the same time and made the harvest a true race against time. The experienced crew Thelema has mastered this task. Enjoy the Thelema Merlot with mushroom risotto, pasta dishes and grilled meat.

Delheim Merlot
The grapes for the Delheim Merlot come from vines that are almost 20 years old, located in the Peperboom vineyard. The ‘Peperboom’ (‘pepper plant’ in English) was originally cultivated here. The harvest was carried out in a two-step selection in order to achieve the maximum concentration of tannins and colour. The wine was fermented with selected yeasts in stainless steel tanks at temperatures between 77° and 82.4° F. Subsequently, the wine remained in contact with the skins for another 18 days and then aged for 15 months in French oak casks, of which 20% were new barrels. Its bouquet offers noticeable aromas of tobacco, red fruit, cloves and cinnamon. On the palate, the Delheim Merlot is elegant, with a subtle structure and silky tannins. It is full-bodied, showing a remarkable freshness recalling aromas of bilberries and plums. Another three to four years of ageing in the bottle will further enhance the wine’s qualities and contribute to its optimal stage of maturity. The Delheim Merlot is definitely a genuine delight to enjoy with fried chicken or mushroom soup.
