Spier 21 Gables Pinotage

For the South African winemakers a good Pinotage is always a challenge. Pinotage makes special demands on the quality of the vineyards and the art of the wine. In the Private Collection the wines have great strength and great depth and it is the art too tame the Pinotage so it becomes not too hard and dry.

Perfectly ripe grapes are therefore an important condition. It is taken by the grapes from their own vineyards of Spier in Stellenbosch, where no more than 50 hectoliters per hectare Pinotage is harvested.

The grapes are picked by hand in order to arrive undamaged in the basement, without oxidation. The Private Selection is made of only the best parts of the vineyard. The fermentation takes place after a short cold maceration, some in open containers. Then the wine is aged in a mixture of French and American oak barrels. American Wood emphasizes the bright and intense sweet fruit from the Pinotage and accentuates the beautiful character of this variety to a particular way.

Colour: intense ruby red.
Fragrance: Subtle fragrance with caramalised black cherries, hints of dark spice and dark chocolate.
Taste: delicious fruit and elegant taste, pleasant feel of wood and vanilla with a light seasoning, a continuing strength, with great length and nice ripe tannins. Can be drunk now, but can also improve 4 to 7 years.
Delicious with a beautiful bouquet with black pepper steak, pasta with pesto and black olives, ripe cheese.

Spier Wines

Niel Joubert kaufte Spier 1965.

Simonsig Redhill Pinotage
The Redhill Pinotage from the Simonsig winery is redolent of plums, mulberries and cherries, complemented by fine, subtle nuances of vanilla. The grapes come from old, low-yield bush vines that are cultivated without wire trellis training systems. However, the vines produce grapes that are more concentrated. On the palate, the Simonsig Redhill Pinotage offers fine tannins, an elegant length and a good structure. Its finish is characterised by spicy nuances of cedar. The pure varietal Pinotage matured for 15 months in predominantly French oak casks. A small percentage of this wine was aged in American oak. You’ll enjoy discovering this high-quality red wine from South Africa with tuna, roasted pork, saddle of lamb and salads with crisp duck, for example.

Delheim Vera Cruz Pinotage
Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage
‘Diesel Pinotage’ is certainly an unusual name for a wine. However, it is easily explained once you know the history behind it. ‘Diesel’ was the name of the dog of Beyer Truters, the owner of the Beyerskloof estate. The dog was his beloved, loyal and constant companion. Diesel was always at his side, whether in the vineyards, in the cellar or in his office, so it was only logical that Beyers Truters named his best wine after his ‘best’ friend. The grapes for the Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage come from bush vines that are cultivated without wire trellis training systems. In South Africa, the bush vine method is often used specifically for Pinotage. The fermentation took place in open barrels for 5 days at an average temperature of 78.8° F, while the must was pressed down every 2 hours. Subsequently, the malolactic fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks. Afterwards, the wine matured for 18 months in new French oak casks. Only 20 out of a total of 300 filled barrels were chosen to produce the Diesel Pinotage. The Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage is a deep purple in the glass. Its bouquet is characterised by complex aromas of blackberries and dark fruit, complemented by elegant notes of cedar wood. On the palate, the wine shows a fine but complex structure of black and red fruit. This Pinotage is truly a superb wine, captivating with its outstanding balance between fruit and wood. This wine has an outstanding ageing potential and it is expected to be a genuine delight over the next 10 years or even longer. It is an ideal accompaniment to spicy Indian cuisine or a well-matured rump steak. The Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage is arguably one of the best Pinotage wines from the Cape.

Spier Signature Pinotage
By planting the pinotage grapes in rows in a north-easterly direction the grapes are not in the bright afternoon sun. This prevents them to develop a roasted and spicy aroma. And it helps even more that the sea is near, only 8 kilometer away. By low proceeds of 50 hectoliters per hectare the grapes get lots of intensity and the wine has enough strength and depth to let a part of it mature in wooden barrels. Fermentation at no more than 25 ° C ensures plenty of fruit. 40% of the wine matured in French oak barrels or American origin, making this a pleasant vanilla tasty Pinotage without sacrificing the fruit.
