Springfield Estate liegt in Südafrika in der Weinbauregion Robertson im Zentrum der südafrikanischen Halbwüste Klein-Karoo. Das Klima der Region ist heiß und trocken, bietet aber bei ausreichender Bewässerung aufgrund äußerst fruchtbarer Böden hervorragende Bedingungen, um Weine von beeindruckender, zarter Mineralität zu kreieren. Besonders für brillante Weißweine sind die Weingüter der Region Robertson bekannt.

Springfield Estate ist im Besitz der Familie Bruwer, die in der neunten Generation Nachkommen französischer Hugenotten sind. Den Durchbruch zur Spitze des südafrikanischen Weinbaus erreichten aber erst die heutigen Weinmacher um Abrie Bruwer.

Die Bruwers verwenden ausschließlich Trauben von eigenen Weinbergen, das Beste wird mit dem Namen Springfield ausgezeichnet. Springfield Estate steht für ein überragendes Qualitätsniveau, aber auch ein moderates Preisgefüge. Es ist eines der besten Weingüter Südafrikas für Weißweine, produziert aber auch hervorragende Rotweine.

Das Weingut Blaauwklippen, 5 Kilometer südlich vom Zentrum Stellenboschs gelegen, hat die Rebsorten Cabernet Sauvignon (größter Anteil), Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec und Petit Verdot zu einem herausragenden Rotwein komponiert. 91 Punkte (4,5 von 5 Sternen) von Greg de Bruyn in John Platter’s Wine Guide sprechen eine deutliche Sprache. Der Jahrgang 2017 von De Blaauwe Klip beeindrucke „mit intensiver violetter Tönung, konzentrierten schwarzen Früchten und reifen Tanninen“, urteilt de Bruyn.Der Reihe nach: Das Bouquet des Rotweins vom Kap duftet verführerisch nach dunklem Cassis, Zigarrenkiste und Zedernholz. Diese Noten harmonieren perfekt mit Nuancen von Pflaumen und Schokolade. Am Gaumen ist der De Blaauwe Klip trocken, mit vollem Körper und großer Energie. The ruby-red Holden Manz Big G is a tribute to the owner of the winery Gerard Holden, a strong, powerful and energetic man - like the wine, a full-flavoured and full-bodied Bordeaux blend. The wine, consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, is well-balanced, very well-structured and powerful. The grapes were picked by hand and only the best grapes from selected plots in the different vineyards were taken to create the Holden Manz Big G. The wine underwent a malolactic fermentation in French casks, of which 30% were new and 70% were used barrels. Subsequently, the wine was aged for another 24 months in wooden casks. The Holden Manz Big G offers aromas of black cherries, red plums, mint, bilberries and cedar in its bouquet, along with hints of pine and subtle herbal nuances. On the palate, it shows noticeable but soft tannins that unite with creamy notes of cassis. The prolonged finish is characterised by a splendid fullness of dark fruit. The Holden Manz Big G is an excellent accompaniment to dried meat or Beef Wellington.

The bouquet of the Rustenberg John X Merriman pampers your senses with diverse notes of dark plums, black currants, sour cherries and tobacco. On the palate, this blend, consisting mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and a smaller percentage of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, is medium-bodied, with a pleasant structure and noticeable tannins that become increasingly subtle over the years. This is already a powerful, high-quality wine that will benefit considerably from additional ageing. The Rustenberg John X Merriman matured for 20 months in French oak casks, of which 35% were new barriques. Second- and third-fill barrels were used as well.This red wine is dedicated to John Xavier Merriman, a former owner of the Rustenberg estate. He acquired the winery in 1892, breathing new life into it.
