There are quite a few people who claim that Aalto wines represent the best of Spanish viticulture in the Ribera del Duero region. Every year, the Aalto wines are once again compared to those produced by the Vega Sicilia estate, and the Aalto wines often win by a nose. For more than 30 years, Mariano García Fernández, the founder of the Aalto winery, was responsible for the wines produced by the Vega Sicilia estate, of which he was the Technical Director. With his own Bodega Aalto, García Fernández wants to achieve the best result without losing respect for the grapes. In creating his wines, he strives for the maximum expression of the terroir, uniting structure and power with elegance and complexity. The Aalto was characterised by a warm winter’s end and an early spring with early flowering. Sufficient rain in summer and a dry autumn led to grapes of an optimal quality. The grapes come mainly from very old vines that are up to 80 years old.The pure varietal Tempranillo (in the Burgos and Valladolid region better known as Tinto Fino) is a cherry red in colour. The wine offers fine notes of spices on the nose, along with light flavours of well-integrated wood. On the palate, the Aalto is wonderfully fresh and dense. Notes of tobacco, coffee and subtle aromas of liquorice reveal the unique style so typical of this Aalto. Due to its soft and round character, the wine can already be enjoyed young. Owing to the soft, enclosing tannins and a good acidity, the Aalto will increase its complexity over the coming years. The ageing of the wine in half new and half used barrels ofAmerican and French oak ensures that it will store well in the bottle. Enjoy the Aalto with a lovely beef roast or simply on its own in front of the fireplace.

Der Aalto Blanco De Parcela ist ein reinsortiger Verdejo, der etwa ein Jahr in französischem Eichen-Barrique heranreifte. Und trotzdem: Bei diesem spanischen Weißwein aus der Ribera del Duero-Region sind vor allem Fruchtigkeit und Frische prägend, getragen von eher hintergründigen, dafür sehr harmonischen Holztönen.Schon das Bouquet des Aalto Blanco De Parcela lässt keinen Zweifel daran, dass dieser Verdejo zur Spitze der spanischen Weißweine gehört. Er duftet faszinierend facettenreich nach Zitrusfrüchten, die wunderbar verwoben sind mit Noten von mediterranen Kräutern, Brioche und gerösteten Nüssen sowie feinen Nuancen von Eichenholz.Am Gaumen ist der strohgelbe Weißwein trocken, frisch und voluminös. Dazu ist der Aalto Blanco De Parcela angenehm cremig, mit einer geschmeidigen Textur und einem schönen Säurespiel sowie einer prägenden Mineralität. Das Finale hallt noch lange nach.

The selection of the grapes was carried out parcel by parcel. This explains the wine’s ‘PS’ designation, which stands for ‘parcel’ and ‘selection’. Only the grapes from the best parcels with the oldest vines are selected to produce the Aalto PS. The grapes for this pure varietal Tempranillo come partly from vines that are more than 60 years old. The vines grow on soils with lime and slate subsoils, giving the wine a lovely mineral freshness. The wine is aged in steel tanks before it matures for 21 months in new French barriques. Subsequently, the wine is aged for another 6 months in used casks. The Aalto PS is a dark, dense purple in colour. Its bouquet is characterised by strong notes of wood and flavours of plums and black cherries. On the palate, the wine is extremely complex, concentrated and powerful. The body continues unabated in a never-ending finish. Although the wine is already quite balanced, further ageing in the bottle will certainly enhance its quality. Serve the Aalto PS with lamb, game or tangy cheeses. This wine is a genuine delight! It is also available in a magnum bottle.

The Alceño Romeo Organic Monastrell is an organic wine from the Jumilla region in Spain. The Monastrell vines grow on barren stony soils with a high lime content, giving the wine its powerful aromas. The wine is an intense cherry red with purple glints in the glass. On the nose, it offers aromas of ripe red fruit, roasted spices and notes of smoke. The Romeo Organic Monastrell is extremely full-bodied and powerful on the palate.Due to the ageing in French and American oak casks, the tannins are always noticeable but wonderfully soft and elegant. The dry red wine is juicy and mature, showing a light sweetness. Hints of cinnamon support the structure all the way into the prolonged finish. Such a good wine for so little money is rare, indeed!Try this Spanish wine from Bodegas Alceño with aubergines stuffed with sheep’s milk cheese and balsamic vinegar, accompanied by tomato ragout. Chilled to 14-15 °C (57.2-59 °F), it also goes beautifully with well-seasoned grilled meat.The 2019 Alceño Romeo Organic Monastrell was awarded the ‘Grand Gold’ at the Mundus Vini Spring Tasting in 2021.
